Hello Sherrie and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums

Here at Gambling Therapy we pride ourselves on being a caring and diverse online community who can help and support you with the difficulties you’re currently facing. We understand that this might be a tough time for you, particularly if you’re new to recovery, so come here as often as you need to and participate in the forums, access online groups and connect to the live advice helpline if you need one to one support. We’re in this together!

Here on the forum you can share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. The beauty of writing it all down is that you can take your time and you will be creating a record of your progress that you can look back on if it ever feels like you’re not moving forward. So, share as much or as little as you like but do try to stick to keeping just one thread in this forum so people know where to find you if they want to be updated on your progress or share something with you.

As well as the forums New Members are invited to join Charles in the New Members Practical Advice Group On Mondays at 21:00 (UK) and Thursday at 19:00(UK)

    And on that note….

I’m going to hand you over to our community because I’m sure they will have some words of wisdom for you 🙂

    Take care

    The Gambling Therapy Team

PS: Let me just remind you to take a look at our privacy policy and terms and conditions so you know how it all works!

    Hello Collection

Thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy friends and family forum. This forum will provide you with warmth and understanding from your peers.

Feel free to use the friends and family group, you’ll find the times for these if you click on the “Group times” box on our Home page

Read about the friends and Family Online Groups

Now that you have introduced yourself you’ll find that many of the people you meet here have already read your initial introduction and they’ll welcome you in like an old friend 🙂

If you’re the friend or family member of someone who is either in, or has been through, the GMA residential programme please take extra care to make sure that nothing you say in groups, or on our forums, inadvertently identifies that person. Even if your loved one isn’t connected with GMA, please don’t identify them either directly or indirectly just in case they decide to use the site themselves.

You’ll find a lot of advice on this site, some of which you’ll follow, some you won’t…but that’s ok because only you fully understand your
situation and what’s best for you and the people you love. So, take the support you need and leave the advice you don’t because it all comes from a caring, nurturing place 🙂

We look forward to hearing all about you!

    Take care

    Hi Stella
I am going away for a week but I will still be facilitating groups on Tuesday evening 20.00 – 2100.00 hours UK time and on Thursday 22.00 – 23.00 hours UK time, it would be great if you could join me so we could ‘talk’ in real time.
You are understood in this forum, as is your anger and sadness, you are among people who care.
Unfortunately the only person who can exclude your mother from gambling sites is your mother, just as the only person who can save your mother is your mother.
Perhaps you could download the 20-questions from the Gambler’s Anonymous website and give them to your mother, she may not realise she has a recognised problem and there is real support for her if she wants it.
The one person you can save is ‘you’. It is so important that you enjoy ‘your’ life and that you don’t let the addiction of another destroy you.
I hope you will keep posting, I will be back in a week and will catch up with your posts and as I said I will be facilitating groups on Tuesday and Thursday.
I too was sick and tired, when the addiction was kicking the life out of me but you can recover your life.
    Please look after yourself
    You are in my thoughts

    Dear Lily
That was a very brave post to write and I hope it will be treated by everyone with the respect it deserves.
I think you are probably right – neither of you had reached a place where you felt entirely safe and with all the other things going on in your lives, there were just too many ups and downs.
I am a great believer in the recovery of F&F being as important as the recovery of a CG – neither party wanted or asked for the addiction and both have to find their own way forward and make of it what they can. Nobody can save anybody else; we all have our own battles.
I think you are an amazing, caring woman who has come through some of the most awful circumstances and yet still manages to laugh with me in the F&F group.
I’m not going to write anymore but suffice it to say I have heard you and I will speak to you soon.
    As Ever

    Hi Lori
I have to be quick as I have just finished my group and I am ready for bed but i just wanted to say that I appreciate that what Charles has said, (which is what I was getting from other sources too) was very difficult for you to hear. I hope you will pop in to a group so that we can talk privately in real time.
Acceptance of problems is always best. If your husband has got a problem that will not be going away you will need support and it is here.
He can control his gambling with support.
Don’t give up hope. Your husband didn’t ask for or want this to happen to him anymore than you.
    speak soon

    Hi DCH
It seems to me that every time you write ‘Still here, still posting, still not gambled’ you are sharing wisdom. The more voices giving the same positive message is music to the ears of those who want to control their addiction,
I think it is necessary to break ground to allow the seeds of recovery to grow and you are doing that too.
    Great Post

    Hi Laura
‘Mundane and silly’ are two words that I could never apply to your posts, both on your own thread and the threads of those you support.
I have heard others who are enjoying recovery feeling awkward about posting in case they sound smug and or complacent but ‘smug and complacent’ are two more words I could never apply to you.
It saddens me to hear about the pain you endure but your words are stimulating and bring joy. Your gamble-free life sounds great – ‘mundane’ – never!
    Thank you
    Velvet
