Hello and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums

Here at Gambling Therapy we pride ourselves on being a caring and diverse online community who can help and support you with the difficulties you’re currently facing. We understand that this might be a tough time for you, particularly if you’re new to recovery, so come here as often as you need to and participate in the forums, access online groups and connect to the live advice helpline if you need one to one support. We’re in this together!

Here on the forum you can share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. The beauty of writing it all down is that you can take your time and you will be creating a record of your progress that you can look back on if it ever feels like you’re not moving forward. So, share as much or as little as you like but do try to stick to keeping just one thread in this forum so people know where to find you if they want to be updated on your progress or share something with you.

As well as the forums New Members are invited to join Charles in the New Members Practical Advice Group On Mondays at 21:00 (UK) and Thursday at 19:00(UK)

    And on that note….

I’m going to hand you over to our community because I’m sure they will have some words of wisdom for you 🙂

    Take care

    The Gambling Therapy Team

PS: Let me just remind you to take a look at our privacy policy and terms and conditions so you know how it all works!

Hi Holdy, well done on posting here.

I hope you cdan be honest wiht your mate – trying to keep things hidden can in itself send peole gambling. I would also ask him not to lend you money in the future.

Talk to your friends. it is up to you if/how much you tell them about your problem but it is important that you tell them you have decided to stop gambling. Don’t get inmto the gambling conversations – a few “I’m not interested”s usually does the trick. If they are reall friends then you will have other things you can talk about.

Maybe find another pub. When you do go to have a drink though just take enough money to cover your beers – that way any gambling will have an immediate consequence of not being able to have a drink. Get banned from your local bookies/whereever it is you usually gamble.

Use support – keep posting here, get to Gamblers Anonymous, talk to your Dr about counselling. Find the support that works for you.

    Hi Jay,

For me the serenity prayer helps – part of that is about accepting the things we can not change – one of the things none of us can change is the past.

The best advice when you are in a hole is to stop digging – dont let that 100k in losses turn into 150k…….200k etc it is a progressive addiction.

You want to stop gambling right now which is great. Now what actions can you take while you feel like that? Get yourself banned from where ever it is you usually gamble? Put other barries in place? Start using support – like regularly posting here, getting to Gambers Anonymous meetings, counselling etc.

Next time those urges return you will already have some bariers in place, already be using the support that will help you not place that next first bet.

    Keep posting.

    Hi Konj,

I am a compulsive gambler. If I had a “system” that allowed me to pick winning bets it would not matter – I would just then lose it all on other bets.

As you say – we have no discipline. If we were able to show that sort of “control” when gambling then none of us would be here in the first place.

I would recommend against making those paper bets – they will just lead to reeal ones and the pain and damage that follws..

Keep posting but I hope to hear the non gambling activities that are filling your time.

Hi Kc, well done on getting back here.

When you say “……not gamble anymore, at least with not real money. …………” does that mean you were making pretend bets? Mind gambling? Playing “free” slots?

Things like that just tease the addiction. Better to starve it completely. How can you fill your time and thoughts with other nn gambling related things?

You were also able to deposit 2000 Euros? That is a lot of money to have access to at this stage. Can you put things in place so that you can’t easily access funds if/when you get an urge? Thge urges weaken if we can’t act on them. Talk to your wife, I am sure she can help you with accountability – when we know that if we gamble we will be found out then it is a big deterrent.

    Keep posting.

The “Open” groups, like the one you tried toconnect to, are unmoderated so there is not always anyone thjer to talk to. All the other types of group have a facilitator so there is always someoen to talk to in them.

I hope to see you post in the My Journal Forum and maybe see you in one of the groups here soon.
