Hey guys, I’m ciaran, I’m 27 and am having serious issues with Gambling at the moment. I have been gambling for about 8 years now and recently I’ve completely lost control. As soon as I get paid I gamble my months wages wages, luckily I immediatey transfer my rent before I start, or I’d be really screwed. I’ve literally been spending about 70% of my money for the last 3 years on Gambling, I dropped out of college because of Gambling, it has literally ruined my life, and for some reason I can’t stop.

Whenever I have a big loss my brain rationalizes it by saying it’s fine because it’s the last time I’m going to do it, then it’s just one bet and I’ll win, but whether I’m up or down I keep gambling till I don’t have a cent left. It’s like my brain is playing tricks on me!

I really want to go travelling, I could have gone 9 months ago if it was not for Gambling, I really really just want to find a way to stop, save up and go traveling, to live a normal life but I’m starting to feel that gambling is stronger than me. Deep down I know I have the power to do it, but for some reason just completely use control of myself.

I am considering going to rehab if my insurance covers it, I’ve been to a few GA meetings and have not found they helped me at all, I need to discipline myself and get over this, I’m really happy with everything in my life, except the gambling and the problems it causes.

I think this site is a great idea by the way, it’s great to have an open place for recovering gamblers to connect with each other, I’m glad I joined.

      Hi Ciaran
Welcome to GT. you have a gambling addiction which means you will never be able to gamble normally . The only thing we can do is stop completely.
Like you I find it impossible to stop so I have to have barriers in place . For example I have a gambling blocker on my phone , I have cut up credit cards. Other barriers include self banning from from casinos and getting someone else to handle your money and give you a small allowance for which you are accountable .

Throw everything you have at this Ciaran – you deserve that feeling of having money in the bank , you fewer to go travelling and you deserve to be free of this horrible addiction.
It’s really hard to stop but many people on here have done it .

Well done on recognising that you have a problem
And well done on seeking help .

      Hi Ciaran

I’m new here also. My story is much like yours. Well done on seeking help. Like IDI said put blockers in place so even if you get the urge to gamble you can’t. Explore all your options and we’re all here if you need us.

Hey guys, Thanks for your kind replies. Yeah, I feel this is something I really need to kick at this point. Saying that, I have just been popped into the casino on my way home from work.

May I ask the name of the gambling blockers you’re using?

      Hi Ciaran,
I use betfilter for iphone. Other people use gamblock.
You will need to block all devices. I think it costs about £12
per month for mine but saves me hundreds- I have very poor will power.
      Hope this helps
