Hi Asufnurse, Good question. Rock Bottom is often mentioned here and at other recovery sites/places. What is it? Well I would say that there is no definitive place; we all have our own “Rock Bottom” For some it may be problems with the law, with work, with family/partners – either ultimatums or separation etc For others it might be somethign less traumatic and they finally get tired of digging holes and climbing out of them just to dig another.
I would say though that this is a progressive problem. As you have found, whatever we think may be a rock bottom, there is always another layer of s**t underneath if we carry on gambling.
I would say for now forget about “Why am I dong this?” In terms of stopping gambling that has little importance. What needs to be focused is the fact of the addiction and the actions you can take.
Read the other stories here – you will read a lot that you will relate to. You will also see the success stories – what are they doing that you can apply to your own situation?
It sounds like you family are aware of the issue. Great, i am sure they will be delighted to help you with some of the barriers you will see have helped others – if you gamble online there are blockers you can get for your devices, family could help set passowrds. We all know that no money = no gambling. We usually find that out when we lose it!! Now use that in recovery, put some accountability in place so that yiuy can’t access funds wth which to gamble. Family could help with that as well.
Barriers help but of course they aren’t the total answer to addiction. They givebreathign space though so that you can start using support. get to the groups here, maybe check out the helpline, you have a lot of support available. Elsewhere too – places like gamblers Anonymous, Counselling and more.
Keep postinhg and let us know the positive actions you are taking to make your next bet less likely.
Again, make YOUR rockbottom NOW.
