If the friendship was based on gambling, Lizbeth, you are better off out of it. I met a few “friends” in the casinos. When I stopped gambling, I often had thoughts of getting in touch and I did with one or two. Guess what the conversation always led to???
I think you have a wonderful way of bouncing back and seeing the good in everybody, Lizbeth. The downside of being too kind is that we can be taken advantage of.
I think it was Mother Teresa of Calcutta who said
“Be kind anyway!”or words to that effect.
Have you any particular type of job in mind ?Will earning money affect your pension?
Perhaps the local Employment Dept. might know of some available jobs. One bit of advice I would give is not to take on a long commute. I worked 12 hour shifts when I went back to work at age 52 and had a 35-40 minute drive both ways.
I hear you about not having a fire, Liz. We have 2 stoves and an open fire.
I don’t think I could live with artificial heat .
    All first world problems!
Not gambling is our greatest bonus.

Refusing to entertain gambling thoughts , prevents gambling action.
It’s not just a crazy addiction. It’s a scary one too.

Just wrote a long post, Monica and it vanished into cyber space….’ hate that…
In brief, it said , even if you cannot re enter the workplace at your previous level, why not explore other options within your profession? Once you get into a work routine you will have better opportunities to update your skills, renew your confidence and put yourself in the running for a more suitable/advanced position.
Sometimes we have to go back to basics, Monica and place one foot on the first rung of Life’s Ladder.
Sitting at home, fearing the worst and thinking only of the negative options you mentioned, will overwhelm you.
You are still young and fit enough so apply for every available job. One opportunity leads to another. Start small and work on it, one day at a time.
You CAN do it! There is a better life out there. Go for it!

    Wonderful progress, Alliesmum!
You are acting fast on the advice that you need to act on. If I had been as quick as you, I could have saved myself a lot of grief, misery and debt. It took me many years to take the final step.
No joy ever comes from gambling.
Leaving a door open to gambling is the ruination of a CG.
When we know we have no access , the urges subside.
When we know we don’t have a box of chocs in the house, we crave less for chocolate. lol!
You might feel you are losing control over your finances but in fact you are gaining control.
It is when we gamble that we lose control.
Gambling controls us for as long as we allow it to.
Stay focused. You have wonderful support on the home front.

You have given your husband the best present of all by stopping gambling, Alliesmum.
Baking a cake with the children sounds great.
You have a wonderful man beside you.
All the more reason never to gamble again.
The guilt still hits me every so often but we can’t change the past.
‘Hope you enjoy the birthday party with your family.
The best things in life may not be free but they sure are less expensive than gambling!

A win for a CG , is always a loss, Kin.
    Great posts!
    God’s Will versus Man’s Will!

Suffering , is one thing none of us can avoid, Monica.
How we deal with it depends on our belief or non belief.
I find it an interesting topic.
Every religion tries to make sense of Suffering. Hindus see it as a result of karmic debt. Buddhists , as a way to extinguish desire. Islam, as Alla’s will. “Born Agains” tell us God only wants us to have health and wealth (while they ask for money gifts for some televanglist. lol!)
Catholic Teaching, which I go by, tells us that suffering has it’s origin in the human will, the abuse of which, through the sin of Adam, caused the rift between God and Man. A rift that only Christ can reconcile.Suffering is never willed by God but is sometimes allowed in the same way a loving father will allow a child to “suffer”the consequences of his actions so that he will grow and learn.
We may not understand God’s reasons. I think we are sometimes allowed to suffer to learn how to trust God more and know there is a reason behind our immediate suffering.
It’s not easy Monica. Life can be very tough . It can also be delightful.
We CAN endure, with His Grace!

Do you get paid in cash, Lizbeth?
I did a bit of Online Selling which involved cash deals, sometimes.
    Just sayin’!!!!

    I hear you Monica!
What do you say about the following quote:
    “Pleasant experiences make life delightful
    Painful experiences lead to growth”?
My take on that is when we go through pleasant times in our life we don’t learn or grow in the same way that we do from more difficult times.
    Suffering can do two things.
    Drag us down
    or
    Lift us up.
I know we are into metaphysics when we speak of suffering but it’s all relative.
I just want you to know that I empathize fully with your situation and wish better things for you.
Acceptance and gratitude go hand in hand
an yes I agree, Life is a Mystery.
I believe we only see a glimpse of it on this side of Eternity.

    Whether it’s said
    In prose or verse
    Keep your money
    In your purse
    Day One Recovery,
    Very well done!
    Time to quit
    You’ve had your fun.
You love the slots when on a roll
But slots can take your life and soul
    Your peace of mind
    Your pride, your strength
    So kiss them goodbye,
    And write poems at length.

You are dealing with a couple of issues here, Tina.
Your man making plans where you are excluded
    (THAT WOULD PUZZLE ME!)
Your awareness that you gambled in his absence in the past
(HAVE YOU DISCUSSED THIS WITH HIM?)
Where do you stand in a relationship that you feel is not balanced.
(IN THE PAST I WOULD HAVE “CLUNG ON”. THESE DAYS I WOULD BE LOOKING AT THE CO-DEPENDENCY ASPECT AND CONSIDERING MY OPTIONS)
Only you can decide, Tina. How long do you know him and how well?
The one thing for sure is that you will need to be on your guard when he goes. Tie up your cash and focus on your recovery.
    Stay busy!

Are you taking any flu remedy, Lizbeth? I was taking lemsip for 10 days with no relief . My throat felt as if it had been sprayed with acid and my ears were like as if two hot prongs had been inserted Even my teeth and gums were very painful. In the end I started on an anti biotic . My GP was phoning me that week with blood tests but I ignored his calls until the Thursday. I had no voice so I just croaked “hello” and he asked to speak to my husband. Told him to bring me immediately to the surgery but I was not able to go so I went next day He told me to extend the antibiotic for a further 7 days.
Perhaps you need an antibiotic, Lizbeth . Do you get the flu injection?
Not easy to take care of a baby when you are unwell.
I am the worst patient imaginable.
No physical tolerance for any pain or illness but I seem to cope with things mentally better than most (So I am told). Mind over matter, I suppose!
Get well soon and don’t worry about those creditors. The whole world is living on a deficit! Let them wait!
