Hi Amanda!
Yes, it’s good to speak with like minded people who understand the nature and dangers of gambling.
I’m sorry to hear you lost your kind and understanding mum. I notice Loss plays a big part in the lives of many gamblers.
I , like you tend to withdraw and isolate after gambling escapades. I find this has become a habit now and I really don’t want to meet people on any level. Gambling has long term consequences apart from monetary loss.
I wonder should you have a deeper look at your relationship with your B/F if he is also into gambling . Especially as you say he enables you?
Maybe joint counselling would help?
Taking time off work to clear your head seems a reasonable thing to do but it can also allow us to use isolation instead of facing the real issues.
Nothing good comes from gambling Amanda.
It has the potential to destroy us.
“Good luck” in recovery!veraParticipantHi JD!
Good to see you!
I think urges subside when we can’t have what we want without putting up a fight. Having easy access, available funds and time on our hands means we am more likely to gamble. For example, I would always choose the nearest casino despite it’s bad reputation for “paying out”because it means I could have it NOW.
Internet gambling is lethal for CGs because we can have it instantly , 24/7.
Have those blockers in place is preventing your urges from taking over , is my guess!veraParticipantAdam, I think what you did was a step in the wrong direction. It doesn’t take from all your excellent progress so this is not a judgement (The kettle can’t call the pot black!!)
Gambling takes hold of us even when we act passively! It could be very tempting for a CG to “play someone else’s machine!”
Funny, when I gamble. I would go ballistic if anyone touched my machine!
I would be very possessive!veraParticipantWrote you a long post Gov. Pressed “Save” It vanished!
Bad internet here!
I know what you’re saying about the free availability of Gambling Sites etc but the root of the problem lies with us. We are the problem!!! Yes, the availability of gambling doesn’t help but don’t allow it to take your focus away from the real issue!
Well done on admitting you have a problem
So have I!!!
If I see the NO DSL sign again I will blame my Internet Provider for the non arrival of this 2nd post !!veraParticipant‘Hope your 5 Point Plan kicks in Maverick. It sounds more like a month’s work, than a day’s work. Take it handy(as my ex boss always said!)
I just heard a snippet from a Radio interview with a lady called Gretchen Rueben . She was referring to a book she has written about Mastering Habits (I didnt get the full title but it might be of interest to recovering CGs.) She mentioned how we fall back on our habits during stressful episodes in life. Therefore it is important to build good habits which will keep us strong during these times of stress. (I think as CGs , one of the reasons we screwed up so badly is because we relied on a (very) bad habit, i.e. gambling to see us through!). She also spoke about safeguards, learning how to cope with failure …” learn to ‘fail small not big’!” and went on to say those who “fail big” tend to overload themselves with more shame and guilt…….
That’s it for now Maverick. I think I’ll track down that book. It seems like an interesting read!
Be good!veraParticipantMaybe you should see your doctor again Maverick, to have your medication monitored?
Walking helps depression. Its good that you are able to write about it here. It will pass Maverick. Everything changes!veraParticipantMost CGs are unshockable Seri and NOBODY would be laughing or think you stupid…
veraParticipantYou will NEVER win your money back Smee!
Believe me, I tried.
It just gets worse and worse every time.
We only stop gambling when we suffer enough!
Time to start again…
Love yourself .
Tough Love!veraParticipantYou have great potential Adam. Don’t narrow your options!
Loyalty is a good trait!
Keep your eyes off that other pundit. Keeping track of his wins could be tempting. Remember CGs never win!veraParticipantThe first word of advice I got here from Lee was
“Postpone your next bet!”
It works, Charlster!
I often said “later”, “not now” , “maybe in an hour”..
Eventually we will be able to say, as P says, “I don’t gamble anymore!”veraParticipantExcellent posts, Kin!
Very true that we cannot return to gambling and beat the system.
Gambling has already beaten US!veraParticipantSeri. I’m reading between the invisible lines…
What can I say, that Geordie hasn’t said already , except let it be a lesson to all.
I got a text earlier to say I am to come and pick up a four figure sum that is owed to me.
I will definitely NOT go alone . In the past I would have been doubling this amount in my mind. Rubbing my hands on the way and conjuring up lies to cover my tracks….
Gambling is a sick occupation!veraParticipantYou ll just have to rely on the Man Above, Seri!
I’m laughing at the thought of you bringing your poor dad to work!! I thought picking up cash was a once off. I guess you do it all the time. Being aware of the danger is half the battle!
It will be relief to you when you get the task completed!veraParticipantI often heard people comment “The machine doesn’t want my money” when the tenner or twenty was “spat back”!
My reaction to that was ” I will insert only €50 notes”. I hadn’t the patience to deal with “spitting back”!
Ever think of changing your job, Adam?
Being alone with bandits is very dodgy for a CG! I suppose you will survive by NEVER carrying money in your back pocket…..veraParticipantCan you get a colleague to go with you tomorrow Seri? Or even bring your dad. Just say you are taking him for a run with you. Does you work allow you to take a passenger? If you are not alone, you won’t have the chance to gamble.
