Happy New Year RDB!
I read your “Appeal” for early entry into GMH for residential treatment. I just hope the Powers that Be took note. You sound as if you are ready to take all they have to offer.
Gambling can only take what we give it . I have given it too much. ‘Seems as if you are in a similar position to some extent.
For 2016 , I intend giving gambling NOTHING!
I did that in 2010, so I know I can do it, as can everybody here on this site.
Saying “no money is the only reason I’m not gambling” is a bit self deprecating ,Riverdale! There is more to it than that. Let’s face it if we really want to gamble we WILL get money. Think about it. It’s clear that you WANT to stop. Keep that uppermost in your mind. The thought of gambling crossed my mind an hour ago. I could see an opportunity to go later tonight BUT I quickly shut off the thought and replaced it with “I won’t be gambling. It’s 2016”!
“Just because the monkey jumps off your shoulder, doesn’t mean the circus has left town” though, so stay aware! Keep posting.veraParticipantYou were on my mind over Christmas, Laura.
Keep that “Barrier” glued to you everywhere you go.
2016 is the Year of the Non Gambler (not the Monkey)veraParticipantSounds like a long trip FG but it will be ok if you share the driving.
Well done on two G free months.
Glad your Christmas celebrations went well.
Enjoy your break.veraParticipantCounting our blessings beats counting a few paltry gambling “wins”, Lee.
As you say money can’t buy the most precious things in life.
There are so many things we have to be grateful for.veraParticipantOur posts crossed Lee!
I hope Santa comes!
Give us an update when you can. I’m sure you’re up to your eyes now.
Great excitement for the children.
I’m worse than a child when it comes to Christmas. My house is like Santa’s Grotto!veraParticipantThanks for posting to my thread, Kin.
I read your posts a lot.
They inspire me and bring great Peace.veraParticipantThis is a great site, Riverdale,
B U T
It’s up to us to use the bag of tools they give us.
In my experience, CGs need to learn how to balance our lives. I have met a lot of “all or nothing” people here. We (me, for one)are either stoney broke or we are “flush”. Either down in our boots, or elated. Either 100% into gambling , or 100% into Recovery.
Finding a happy medium one day at a time helps, I think.
I don’t say this as a judgement about any member here. It is just something I have noticed. As people move down the lane of recovery , mellowness sets in.
I hope and pray Gordon House will be the answer to your gambling problem. This Christmas may not be a “rich” one for you but wherever you stay, I’m sure help with preparing food, washing up and chatting to everyone will be a welcome present. There are things in Life that no money can buy. Sadly we tend to forget about them whether we are “up” or “down”.
Best wishes in recovery!veraParticipantAll set for Christmas, Bettie?
Did you apply for that position?
Why not take Spanish classes for the new Year? (I’m still dreaming of taking up swimming lessons with the voucher hubby got me for my birthday…..)
Just to let you know you’re in my thoughts ‘n prayers and bring your thread to the top of the pile!!veraParticipantBelated Birthday greetings to you and your mom, Lizbeth.
You are so lucky to have your daughter and son with you for Christmas.
I’m sure your husband will be watching over you all.
Happy Christmas. Relax and have fun!
‘Hope Santa comes!veraParticipantIn the run up to Christmas , everything seems magical. Then a stillness sets in. It seems as if you are over worked FG. Take it easy and get all those people to help with the chores.
I agree with Sad. You have a great husband and your gambling was never allowed to damage your family. There is a lot to be said for couples who are loyal to each other and can agree to keep things sacrosanct in their marriage.
Enjoy your holiday.
Happy Christmas !veraParticipantCompulsive gambling is progressive Jay.
I tried so many times to double my money. It never worked because every win went back on the double.
We need to keep repeating the mantra “CGs never win. CGs never win. CGs never win, CGs never win, CGs NEVER W I N”, until the penny finally drops in our addicted brains . Only then will we ask ourselves, “Well , what’s the point of trying when we will NEVER win?”
It does sink in eventually, Jay.
NEVER give up trying!
We are all in this battle together. One day at a time.
It is not easy but it is possible.veraParticipantI loved your poem, Riverdale.
There is always hope.
From the words of your poem having access to CASH is your downfall.
Same here!
Can you get someone to take care of your funds?
I know your immediate situation sounds hopeless, but as Sad rightly said, when we are broke money becomes our main focus. There is much more to gambling than money. I’m sure you know that.
I hope and pray some family member takes you under his/her wing this Christmas.
Any one on this Forum could be down to 17p. The good news is when we are broke, we can’t gamble!
Keep posting!veraParticipantBeing grateful for what we DO have, helps a lot , Seri.
Let’s count our blessings!
It’s much easier to see what we don’t have or what we wish we had.
Every parent worries about their “children”, big or small.
I wish I was 47 again but age is only a number.
You have done so well your parents must be VERY proud of you.
(Yes, there is always some one worse off. My daughter sent me photos of a friend’s very sick babies She does charity work in S E Asia. Made me feel sick when I thought of the money I gambled.)
Put your life in God’s Hands Seri.
He is very capable of looking after all our needs.
Who needs gambling?veraParticipantI hope your situation is improving Maverick, and that you are preparing for Santa. ODAAT. We need to see Christmas through the eyes of a child. Stay strong!
veraParticipantRecovery seems to have brought lots of changes into your life, Charles . All for the better. Thank God!
Different types of CGs are affected in different ways, I think. For example “action gamblers” would be planning either a live race meeting or a day in the bookies on St Stephen’s Day (Boxing Day). I know people who go to race meetings that day as a social event. It would be the most boring event on earth for me. I wouldn’t dream of going! For casino/slot machine gamblers , however things would be different. Also it depends on gender and relationship status. Single women or men who have no family ties could allow Christmas to go over their heads in a casino if they choose. In my case, Christmas is one time of year when I know I won’t gamble. I mean 24th, 25th and 26th. I am always too busy cooking (Or giving orders re cooking!)Opening presents . Tidying up or nagging others to do so lol! I have a long journey to the church on 24th and 25h so I’m usually whacked after that. I have to chase up and collect my sons on Christmas Eve . They don’t drive so I really would not have time or energy to plan/arrange a gambling trip. I usually have all available money spent on presents I love buying them . As far as I know casinos close here on Christmas Day (Maybe not this year but I won’t be making enquiries) When my youngest son goes through his bad moods, it would be tempting to escape but this year I have a plan should any thing happen…
It’s in the aftermath of Christmas , when they all leave and a bit of money reappears that I could easily slip away alone “to check out the sales ” Men find shops boring. LOL…..
That is my danger time!
Especially this year.
