Hi Jay the reason your brain tells you to gamble is because it knows you enjoy it ( before you lose) , it is not your brains fault. Teaching your brain not to tell you this is not easy , i have mentioned this recently. i.e. if your right handed your brain tells you to pick up a cup of tea with your right hand automatically, if you tell your brain to pick it up with your left hand over time it will do this automatically. In certain situations your brain says go gamble because it knows you feel better when winning or just escaping from the real world if only for a short time. So when your brain says go gamble you have to stop-think-and keep thinking it through (all the reasons why you shouldn’t) until the thought passes.
mickyParticipantHi Sharins well done on recognising your addiction so early before it totally escalated , day 6 , day 7 they all are different numbers and different days thats the beauty of them . Mark each day with a £1 in a money box and treat yourself now and again.
mickyParticipantHi i-did-it pleased you liked my explanation of how our brain works regarding things we do . Sometimes i have to tell myself to slow down as well because i’m trying to do everything at once and right now is no exception , i have a list of stuff to do and iv’e gotten up early to do them ( yet i’m still trying to multi task when theres no need to ) . So iv’e sat down with a cup of tea and read your post and i feel alot better knowing it isn’t just me trying to please everyone. As they say ROME wasn’t built in a day and remember the HARE and TORTOISE race , lets take a leaf out of the Tortoises book.
mickyParticipantDay 12 and life is continuing to be good and normal again. Lots of good tools i’m using, day planner, daily spends, alcohol, gambling diary, monthly budget planner and regular exercise. £12 in my kitty .
mickyParticipantWhen i done the NPGC course treatment via london i learned that it’s not our brains fault that it tells us to gamble, when we are in certain situations our brain tells us to do something to make us feel better i.e. “gamble” ( before we lose of course). If you are right handed our brain tells us to pick up a cup with our right hand, if we tell our brain to pick up the cup with our left hand over time eventually we no longer have to tell it , it will do it automatically. So when our brain tells us to gamble although it isn’t easy if we stop , think and keep thinking no and tell our brain no eventually the thought will subside. And another day another £1 in my kitty which makes £11.
mickyParticipantHi i-did-it thanks for your post on my thread ,yes my world is in colour again not just black and white, i too get urges it’s normal to have them. Our brain tells us to gamble because it makes us feel good ( before we lose everything ) if your right handed your brain tells you to pick up a cup with your right hand , if you tell it to pick the cup up with your left hand over time it will do it automatically. What i’m saying is it’s not your brains fault that it says to you “gamble”, as hard as it is we have to stop, think and keep thinking until the urge subsides.
mickyParticipantNo two days are the same and thats so good in recovery everything is in colour again,
mickyParticipantor a football team , you need 11 players , your in midfield you lose the ball , your centre half gets it but inadvertently passes to the opposing striker who shoots only for your keeper to save well. Lots of barriers and team mates to help you through the game.
mickyParticipant9th round and still here smelling the coffee lifes good. (£9 in my kitty)
mickyParticipantcounting( take off ing )and they have classed the word as rude ???
mickyParticipant***** was the word ***** not sure why it’s been classed as a rude word ?
mickyParticipantAnd on the 8th day £7 turned into £8, just a thought because in recovery you can ***** the days and the beauty of it is each day has a different number because each day is different anyway.
mickyParticipantWether it’s one day, one week, one month or one year i think it’s important that we celebrate our achievements and reward ourselves . Rewards can be small a £1 put in a money box , a magazine, a CD whatever makes us happy. After all it is a daily struggle to get through each day in recovery from our addiction. I now have £7 in my recovery money box .
mickyParticipantHi Mav i am one day behind you i’m on day 7 today . You say you will keep trying and i am too that makes us good people who do want to change our lives around from this addiction. Hope your having a good day today and keeping focused like i am one day at a time.
mickyParticipantHi jay just been reading through your thread and how positive and focused you are now since you last gambled 22 weeks and going strong , keep it up stay focused one day at a time.
