Hello and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums

Here at Gambling Therapy we pride ourselves on being a caring and diverse online community who can help and support you with the difficulties you’re currently facing. We understand that this might be a tough time for you, particularly if you’re new to recovery, so come here as often as you need to and participate in the forums, access online groups and connect to the live advice helpline if you need one to one support. We’re in this together!

Here on the forum you can share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. The beauty of writing it all down is that you can take your time and you will be creating a record of your progress that you can look back on if it ever feels like you’re not moving forward. So, share as much or as little as you like but do try to stick to keeping just one thread in this forum so people know where to find you if they want to be updated on your progress or share something with you.

    And on that note….

I’m going to hand you over to our community because I’m sure they will have some words of wisdom for you 🙂

    Take care

    The Gambling Therapy Team

PS: Let me just remind you to take a look at our
privacy policy and terms and conditions so you know how it all works!

Ok Raj, why not list here the things you love which you would hurt if you gamble and the things you fear will happen if you continue to gamble? That way you can look back at your list when you feel the urge to gamble and remind yourself of the reasons why you don’t want to.

    Kind Regards

    Hi Chris

Do you have a thread in “My Journal”? I’d like you to get all the support you need so starting a thread in “My journal” would be a really good idea. Maybe you could copy and paste some of your above post?

    Thanks

    Hi Audrey

I’m really glad you found us and took the time to post on this thread. Can I suggest that you start your own thread in “My Journal”? That way people will be able to find you easily and support you directly whereas they might not find you so easily here.

    Thanks

    Hi Danielle

You’re in the right place, so many of the people that use our site have felt what you’re feeling right now but they have found a way to overcome the addiction and live the lives they want to live.
Recovery is a hard road and it’s one that takes a while to travel but it sounds like you have hit rock bottom and you’re ready to do what you need to do to get past this. So, lets start with physical barriers…are you ready to exclude yourself from the casino’s closest to you? Take someone with you to do it because the last thing you want to do is to go there alone when you’re feeling this vulnerable. Is there anyone you can hand over control of your finances to while you’re feeling like this? Removing your access to cash and cards could go a long way to steering you away from temptation. Also, look at how you are spending your time, if you recognise that you are in danger of gambling have a plan ready of something you can do that will distract you (preferrably with other people rather than on your own) and make sure you can do it at a moments notice.
I can tell from what you have written that you’re feeling alone right now, let me reassure you that you’re not. There are many thousands of people from all over the world that access this site and many of them are taking their first tenative steps towards recovery just like you…you have given them a voice and you have given them hope. I know that our older members will have a few words to say to encourage you so I’m going to hand you over to them but I just wanted to say hi and acknowledge what you’re going through before I posted our official welcome…which I’ll do now.
    Stay close!

I agree that not all problem gamblers are the same. I’m always concerned when I hear people on this site saying “Well of course, compulsive gamblers do X,Y or Z” they do it for “This reason, or that reason” and they feel X,Y,Z.
We are all individuals, all different and in THAT way problem gamblers are the same as everyone else 🙂
    Thanks for sharing.
