Hello and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums. By posting to the forums you’re allowing the diverse and caring Gambling Therapy community to help support you through the difficulties you’re facing.

This may well be a tough time for you – particularly if you’re new to recovery, so we encourage you to post here as often as you need to, as well as making use of the online groups and the live advice helpline if you’d like some one-to-one support. We’re all in this together! If you’re a new member, you are warmly invited to join Charles in one of the New Members Practical Advice groups (Mondays at 21:00 UK Time and Thursdays at 19:00 UK Time).

The forum is a great place to share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. By writing it all down you can start to build a record of your progress that you can look back on – particularly useful if you’re ever feeling stuck. Share as much or as little as you like – but you’re encouraged to stick to keeping to just one thread in this forum – so people know where to find you to check in on your progress or to share something with you.

The Gambling Therapy staff team don’t generally post to the forums as it is a peer support area of the site – so we’ll hand you over to the community from here.

    Take care,

    The Gambling Therapy Team

PS. Please take a moment to review our privacy policy and terms and conditions so you know how it all works.

    Hi Jaymay,
It would be a shame if you moved away from the forum. If any of us could do it on our own then to be blunt we wouldn’t be in the $88t in the first place.

Stopping gambling is a day at a time. But living life isn’t. Stopping gambling allows us to plan things knowing we wopnt have blown our money the day before the plans.

What to do to fill your time? We all have different interests. Was there anything you used to do but have stopped since gambling took over? Anything you have always fancied doing but not got around to?

When i first stopped i used to go to the cinema on a day off and watch any old rubbish to fill me time. It gets easier though – gardening, running, scuba, theatre, exercie, reading, walking the dog……. Pick an interest and google it adding your local area. There will sure to be groups of people doing that interest.

If you do decide to move away from the forum then email the office – https://www.gamblingtherapy.org/about-us/contact-us/ Though then I have a question for you – what support are you going to use instead? Coz again if we could do it on our own we wouldn’t be here.

I hope you keep posting and let us know the positive steps you are taking to both not gamble and to fill your time.

Hi Zack and welcome. First my apologies – it shouldn’t have taken this long fo rsomeone to respod.

I can’t comment on the medication or the possibility of ADHD – that is somethign you need to talk to your Dr about.

What I can say those is that, whatever the cause of your addiction, the gambling is now a problem in it’s own right and needs addressing. You could sort out all other issues and still be unable to gamble “normally”.

Read the other stories here. You will read a lot that you will relate to. You will also see the success stories – what are thye doing that you can apply to your own situation?

I look forward to seeing the positive steps you are taking. Maybe see you in one of the groups here too.

    Keep posting.

    Hi Jaymay and welcome back.

I am glad this site helped you before – it can again.

For me the important thing to remember is that if we need help to stop gambling then it is also wise to continue to use support to maintain recovery – we are never “cured” but we can have a great gamble free life. Using support is more likely to keep it that way.

    Keep posting.

Hi Henry, well done on looking for help.

First my apologies – it shouldn’t have taken this long to authorise your first post.

Your testimony will help others – I hope that reading the other stories here also helps you in your own recovery. You are right about the “advice” that peole sell – even when I was in the grip of this addiction I realised that if the advice was any good then they wouldn’t actually need to sell it – they would just act on it thmeselves to make money!

I wish you well in your battles with cancer. Maybe tell us a little more about your battles with this addiction. Have you managed to stop now?

You have a lot of support available, noth here and elsewhere.

Hopefully i will read more about your story here or maybe pop into one of the groups we have here.

    Keep posting.

    Hi Marek,

Well done on looking for help. You are not alone with this problem. Read the other stories here; you will read a lot that you will relate to. You will also see the success stories and the sorts of things that are helping others stop gambling. You can apply them to your own situation.

You are gambling online, get yourself excluded from your usual sites. Then you can install a blocker on your devices which will stop you signing up at others. Here is a link to details of a few blockers. https://www.gamblingtherapy.org/information/how-do-i-block-gambling-sites/

You wife could help with one of the otehr barriers you will read about – limit your easy access to funds so that you can’t gamble instantly on an urge.

There is a lot of support around these days – this link might help find a Gamblers Anonymous meeting close to you; just click on your country. https://www.gamblersanonymous.org/ga/addresses?page=1

Keep posting and let us know the positive steps that you are taking.

Hi Don, yes Gamban should work in Canada or any other country. It blocks your device. Here is a link to details of a few blockers; including Gamban https://www.gamblingtherapy.org/information/how-do-i-block-gambling-sites/

Well done on your gamble free time Jerem. One day at a time is small and achieveable but soon add up and can achieve great things.
