Hi and welcome back,
You can stop gambling, words, promises, even intentions rarely work on ther own though – it’s actions that count.
Actions like getting yourself officially excluded from that casino and any others local to you. Actions like restricting our easy, unaccountable access to funds with which to gamble.
Actions like getting to support = whether that is here, places like Gamblers Anonymous, counselling or anything else. Then continuing to use that support, not just when we have lost and are hurting but to maintain recovery.
Keep posting and let us know what positive actions you are taking.
charlesModeratorHi Chris, you can stop I promise you.
But words. promises, even intentions rarely stop us gamblig – it is actions that count.
Look at the otehr stories here and you will see a lot that you will relate to. You will also see some of the actions you cn take.
You will read how barriers can help. For instance get yourtself excluded from where ever it is you usually gamble. If it is online then you can alos instal blockers on your devices.
Financial barriers also help. Your partner could help with those. Limit your instant easy access to gambling funds. Put things in place so that you are accountable and can’t gamble secretly.Filling your time is going to be important, fill both your time and thoughts away from gambling. Your partner could help with that as well.
Most of all use support – whether that is here, places like Gamblers Anonymous, counselling, other online support. There are a lot of options these days. If we could do it on our own then none of us would be here.
Keep posting and let us know what positive actions you are taking. I hope to meet you in a group here soon as well.

charlesModeratorHi and well done on looking for help.
First my apologies – it really shouldn’t have taken this long to approve your post.
Read the other stories here; you will see a lot that you will relate to. You will also see the success stories – what are they doing that you can apply to your own situation?
As you have found there are lots of forms of gambling but it is all the same addiction.
If boredom is a trigger then use that awareness – plan your time. Limit your unaccountable access to gambling funds.
Most of all use support – if we cold do it on our own then none of us would be here.
Luckily these days there is a lot of support around, here and elsewhere.
Keep posting and hopefully I will see you in one of the groups here as well.
charlesModeratorHello and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums. By posting to the forums you’re allowing the diverse and caring Gambling Therapy community to help support you through the difficulties you’re facing.
This may well be a tough time for you – particularly if you’re new to recovery, so we encourage you to post here as often as you need to, as well as making use of the online groups and the live advice helpline if you’d like some one-to-one support. We’re all in this together! If you’re a new member, you are warmly invited to join Charles in one of the New Members Practical Advice groups (Mondays at 21:00 UK Time and Thursdays at 19:00 UK Time).
The forum is a great place to share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. By writing it all down you can start to build a record of your progress that you can look back on – particularly useful if you’re ever feeling stuck. Share as much or as little as you like – but you’re encouraged to stick to keeping to just one thread in this forum – so people know where to find you to check in on your progress or to share something with you.
The Gambling Therapy staff team don’t generally post to the forums as it is a peer support area of the site – so we’ll hand you over to the community from here.
Take care,
The Gambling Therapy Team

charlesModeratorWell done IDI, you deserve your success. I am glad you are enjoying all those other thigns in life 🙂
charlesModeratorGood to hear from you Meghna. Keep doing the things that are working.
charlesModeratorHi Don, good to see you posting aain.
So think on this question….
What are you trying to control? Your addiction? Or your gambling? There is a subtle difference.
If you think of the addiction as a monster asleep in the corner we can keep it that way. Howeve, keep poking that monster with a stick an sooner or later it’ll wake up and bite our ass! We can control that monster by starving it.
When it comes to controlling our gambling…. if we were the sort of people who could do that then we wouldn’t be here in the first place.
I guess there are two other questions we need to ask ourselves…
Is what we love/like about gambling wortht the crap that follows? Coz we can’t have one without the other.
Do we take the steps that will make our next bet less likely now…. or later when deeper in the s**t?
When it comes to wanting to post with some “good sobriety news” that is more likely to happen if you post regularly now whie struggling. Consider this – if an alcoholic waited until he was sober before he used support he would likely remain drunk.
Keep posting.
charlesModeratorHello and well done on looking for support.
First my apologies – it really shouldn’t have taken this long to authorise your post.
Read the otehr stories here, you will r4ead a lot that you will realte to. You will also see the success stories – what are they doing that you can apply to your own situation? You will see that barriers can help – get yourself banned from your localcasinos. Ask your usual online sites to exclude you.
There are also blockers that will stop you signing up at others.
Keep posting here and maybe I wioll see you in onme of the groups soon as well where i can give you some more suggestions as to steps you can take.
One day at a time we can all choose to not gamble.

charlesModeratorHi Lavende. Well done on asking your husband to help with accountability on your account.
What else can you put in place before payday? Could you transfer funds to his account and then get them drip fed back when you need them for non gambing expenses and activities?
How are you going to plan your time for Friday? Somethign to fill both your time and thoughts away from gambling.
charlesModeratorHi Ivan and welcome.
First of all I must apologise – it shouldn’t have taken this long to approve your post.
Well done on looking for help. Here we have these forums – read the other stories here and you will see a lot that you will relate to. Also live groups and a 1- 1 helpline.
Now that you ahve stopped gambling you have a lot of support available.
I can relate to what you say, I was pretty much your age when I stopped gambling. Put some barriers in place to start with: exclude from your usual sites, get a blocker to stop you signing up at others. Try and speak to your parents or someone else you trust, they can help with some of the financial barriers you will read about here. It is a lot easier to tell them now that you won’t just be presenting them with the problem – you can be showing them what you are going to DO about it which is a big difference,
There is also a lot of other support around. Places like Gamblers Anonymous, counselling, even zoom support groups. The important thing is to use it.
Keep posting and let us know the positive steps that you are taking.
