    Hi John,

Take an honest look at your finances. Not gambling will obviously improve them but take a look anyway. Can you pay your bills? Can you meet any debt repayments? Can you do those things in a manageabel, sustainable way if not gambling? If the answer is yes, great. If the answer is no though then get proper financial advice. The Citizens Advice bureau is a good place to do that in the UK or http://www.stepchange.org/ both offer free, impartial advice here in the UK. They can help you get things to that manageable, sustainable place.

Keep posting and maybe I will see you in a group later.

    Hi Andy and welcome.

You are not alone with this problem as you can see. I think many of us were feeling fairly worthless by the time we come here or arrive at our first GA meeting. Who would love me when i hated myself? No one thing is going to make things better.

Going to GA meetings helped me. the Serenity prayer helped me deal with the past, ironic really for an athiest/agnostic! The past is one of the things we have to accept we can not change.

In the early days i found that doing small, achievable positive things helped, I hadn’t achieved anything very positive in a long time. Making amends where I could as well.
Mayybe start a thread in the My Journal Forum, keep a track of all your positive achievements. It sounds like you have stopped gambling at the moment? What has helped you do this? What will make it harder for you to go back to it? I look forward to reading the positive steps you are taking.

    Hi Liam and welcome,

You want control? Maybe look at it this way then. Having your family look after your money for you will in fact give you more control over your money, not less. After all how much control over our money do we have when we are gambling?

Why not try GA again? Reading what you have written it seems it helped you stop gambling for a period? Then you stop going and things get out of control again… … How about going to meetings and not stopping? using this forum as well you can be stronger still. keep posting and let us know the positive steps you are taking.

Hi Alex and welcome to the site. If you read some of the other stories here you will see you aren’t alone with this problem, you will also see the sort of things that have helped others to stop gambling – hopefully you can apply some of those to your own situation.

Where is it you play poker with your dad? If it is at a casino then why not get self excluded from it? That will remove one temptation as your dad will know you can’t go with him.

There is a lot of gambling around these days – the good news is that there is also a lot of support available to us as well. Have you tried a Gamblers Anonymous meeting?

Use all the support you can, if we could do it on our own then none of us would be here. Keep posting and let us know the positive steps you are taking. What things can you put in place before you next get paid?

    Hi Kathryn,

I see you are already getting great support from others. Well done on your honesty, I’d say that shows how far you have come. Your gamble free time isn’t in vain; the date of your last bet may have changed but the work you have done in recovery is still there.

Get back to basics, you know what works. Get your barriers in place, post here, I used to quite often see you in groups but haven’t in a while, check out the group times and you will see some of them have changed. Check again at the end of the month as our clocks change here so the times will change again where you are.

Again, well done on your honesty. Hopefully see you in a group again soon – just don’t mention the cricket. 😉

Hi rajhk and welcome to the forums. I see you are already getting some good advice and i’m sure you will be reading more on the other threads here.

You say that you have stopped and started again many times in the past, I expect a lot fo us could say the same. What’s going to be different this time?

You are stopping now, you will get some funds together, you will have somethign ahppen in life and get urges to gamble – whast going to stop you? If when that happens you are posting here and using support that would help. if someoen is looking after your funds and you are accountable that would help. Other barriers would help.

Keep posting and let us know what positive things you are putting in place

Keep posting Ican, if you gamble post of course but just as importantly keep posting and talking when you are not gambling. We all need support to stop gambling of course – then it’s important to keep using that support in order to maintain recovery. Maybe see you in some of the groups as well.

Hi Venelope and welcome. I see you are already getting some good advice here. Why not banm from that other casino? Show yourself how much you really wasnt to stop this time. You can do it. It would be good to do it to before payday. Once proper barriers are in place then payday can become like just another day.

Use all the support you can, keep posting here, connect to the groups or helpline if you can. Have you checked out your local Gamblers Anonymous meetings? There is a lot of support out there, the more we use the stronger we can get.

keep posting, one day at a time.

    Hi Danny and welcome.

Well done on the steps you have taken so far. getting banned from those sites was a good idea but maybe think about gettign a blocker for your PC as well in case any other sites prove tempting.

Willpower and determinationa re important of course but it’s also important to use support as well. keep posting and I look forward to hearing your progress in recovery.

    One day at a time.

Hi Mike, well done on your first week.

Well done on not gambling, be careful though, as well as any recklessness with money alcohol can make anyone vulnerable.

“The familiar walk to work past loads of betting shops with cash in my pocket”

Did you need that cash in your pocket? If your job doesn’t involve require your own cash then why not just carry enough for lunch and a drink? Maybe even make sandwiches. In these easr;y days there is no need to test yourself with unnecessary cash in your pocket.

I look forward to hearing how your 2nd week goes.
