Hi Liam. It’s good to hear your thoughts and that you are going to get back to something you know has worked for you in the past. Back to basics is important. In fact recovery doesn’t have to be complicated – the basics still work regardless of how long anyone has been in recovery.
In an earlier post you said you had other things to address and work on, you can still do that. In fact getting back to basics will let you do that as we are unlikely to be able to address much of anything until we find a way to stop gambling. keep posting.
charlesModeratorHi Marty,
Liam has already given you some good advice. It’s important to use the support that is available, if we could do it on our own then no one would be here in the first place.Read the otehr stories here – you will see the sort of thing that has helped others stop gambling.
What barriers can you put in place? Can your dad hold your money for you and help you be accountable for how you spend it? Where do you gamble? Wherever it is you can get yourself banned.
Keep posting and let us know the positive steps you are taking.

Hello Marty and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums
Here at Gambling Therapy we pride ourselves on being a caring and diverse online community who can help and support you with the difficulties youre currently facing. We understand that this might be a tough time for you, particularly if youre new to recovery, so come here as often as you need to and participate in the forums, access online groups and connect to the live advice helpline if you need one to one support. Were in this together!
Here on the forum you can share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. The beauty of writing it all down is that you can take your time and you will be creating a record of your progress that you can look back on if it ever feels like youre not moving forward. So, share as much or as little as you like but do try to stick to keeping just one thread in this forum so people know where to find you if they want to be updated on your progress or share something with you.
And on that note….
Im going to hand you over to our community because Im sure they will have some words of wisdom for you 🙂
Take care
The Gambling Therapy Team

PS: Let me just remind you to take a look at our
privacy policy and terms and conditions so you know how it all works!
10 November 2014 at 9:08 pm in reply to: Saturday November 8th 2914 – the last date I will ever place a bet #27335charlesModeratorHi Andy and welcome. I hope you are finding it useful to read some of the other stories here. You can see you aren’t alone and also see the sort of thing that has helped others. You can then apply those things to your own situation.
I hope you can post about your success when you come here on Sunday, my own advice though would be to try and use support through the week – that makes that success more likely.
Keep posting and let us know how you are getting on and the positive steps you are taking.
charlesModeratorHi Skevlouva, good to meet you yesterday and god to see your first post. I see you are already getting some great advice and support. keep posting and hopefully I will see you in a group again soon.
charlesModeratorHi John, well done on the steps you have taken. Maybe see you in a group later. Stay strong over the weekend, when you go to exclude from bookies then go with empty pockets, just a passport photo.
charlesModeratorThanks for the update Kirty, great post. Walking the dog is cheaper than the gym anyway 😉 keep posting.
charlesModeratorJust been catching up – a lot of positive things going on Liz, good to see.
charlesModeratorHi Liam,
Kpat is right, trust and respect does take a while to rebuild. So of course does self respect.Do you still have your GA literature? One of the things that helped me was to do some small achievable positive things. Pick one or two of the “just for today” list and do them. Stopping gambling is great, working recovery is better.
Keep posting and let us know the positive steps you are taking.
3 November 2014 at 6:26 pm in reply to: Today is the first day of the rest of my life, today i take a different path. #25748charlesModeratorHi Micky, sounds like you two gambling days have come after payday? What things can you put in place before next pay day? What will be different this time?
charlesModeratorHi Wize Fox. You can do this. Use all the support you can, apply all the tools you have. If the gambling on your phone is too much of a temptation at the moment then use that knowledge – get a new phone! One that just makes calls and texts for now. keep posting.
charlesModeratorHi Bellman,
i’m glad you managed to connect in the end. I hope the group helped, see you again soon I hope. keep posting and let us know the positive steps you are taking in recovery.
charlesModeratorClick on Support Groups at the top of this page, hover over the group time and it should show a green “join” link, click on that.
Alternatively – Click on Support Groups at top of page, click on view as list and it will show the groups that are open and you can click on it there. If you take that option then make sure you click on the right group as there are usually several different language groups on at the same time.
Hopefully see you shortly! 🙂
charlesModeratorHI SJ, well dome on getting banned from those Facebook slots. Hopefully see you later in a group.
charlesModeratorHi Bellman and welcome to the Forum. Well done on getting banned from those internet sites, why not get banned from where ever it is that you placed those footy bets as well?
I facilitate some of the groups here and there are 3 consequtive groups this evening running form now till 10pm UK time. It would be good to meet you if you wanted to talk to other compulsive gamblers.
