Hello and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums

Here at Gambling Therapy we pride ourselves on being a caring and diverse online community who can help and support you with the difficulties you’re currently facing. We understand that this might be a tough time for you, particularly if you’re new to recovery, so come here as often as you need to and participate in the forums, access online groups and connect to the live advice helpline if you need one to one support. We’re in this together!

Here on the forum you can share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. The beauty of writing it all down is that you can take your time and you will be creating a record of your progress that you can look back on if it ever feels like you’re not moving forward. So, share as much or as little as you like but do try to stick to keeping just one thread in this forum so people know where to find you if they want to be updated on your progress or share something with you.

    And on that note….

I’m going to hand you over to our community because I’m sure they will have some words of wisdom for you 🙂

    Take care

    The Gambling Therapy Team

PS: Let me just remind you to take a look at our
privacy policy and terms and conditions so you know how it all works!

Phew. I’m glad it was only in you dream Kin. My own opinion is that the addiction is still going to be there in our subconscious, if the only way it can get out now is in our dreams then that’s a good thing! 🙂

Filling the void is important as well, how are you filling your gamble free time?

Great post Mark. The only thing you are wrong about is that your post was beginning to “drag on.” Such a positive post and good read could never do that. 🙂 Keep posting.

    Hi Mav,

There is always someone you can talk to, somewhere to get support. Gambling might not be your only problem but by staying gamble free you will be better placed to address other issues.

Use all teh support you have available, there are always options.

If you ever feel desperate then talk to the Samaritans, they are always there for people.

    Hello HD,

I’m glad to hear that you are reading the other stories here. You will no doubt have read some made by people who have been in a situation similar to yourself. There is life after gambling I promise you.

There is always someone to talk to when you are feeling low, as P has suggested talk to the experts. Check this link out as well

There is a lot of support out there.

Your family and friends have heard it all befoe? Ok then this time done give them words and promises. Give them actions. After all that has happened Im sure one of them would be delighted if you got your wages paid into their account. As you will be reading elsewhere, barriers help. What things can you put in place so that next pay day you can’t gamble easily or unaccountably?

When it comes to the debt that can be sorted. There are a lot of options around these days, from bankruptcy to repayment plans, with a lot in between.

One reason to keep trying? I could give you 100s I gambled for over 20 years and I can tell you that recovery is well worth the struggle.

    Keep posting.

    Hi Mav,

Why didn’t you seek recovery earlier? The simple answer is that you weren’t ready to do so then, you are now. We can’t change the past Mav, we can just learn from it.

Regrets? The serenity prayer helped me a lot, somewhat ironic for an agnostic lol One of the things we can never change is our past. Then, lots of things, finding things away from gambling to fill my time and thoughts. Making amends where I could, finding new interests, new friends etc etc

None of those things happened quickly.

Don’t watch those You Tube videos, your wife is right. If we think of the addiction as a monster asleep in the corner then doing stuff like that is like poking it with a stick – sooner or later it’ll wake up and bite our ass!!

Personally I’d cut out watching the stuff about compulsive gamblers on there as well. You go to GA, you come here, staying up till the early hours watching stuff probably isn’t going to add anything to your support.

I know some great books that help with addiction. They are called thrillers, sci fi, horror, romance, crime etc etc Books that will help fill your time and thoughts away from gambling.

Anyway, those are just a few thoughts from me, hope they help.

See you in a group later maybe.

Hi Danny and welcome to the forum.

Well done on your 2 months gamble free time. have you been using support to get to this point? As you can see from the other stories here you aren’t alone with this problem so you don’t have to deal with it on your own either.

I hope reading the other stories here helps. Maybe check out your local GA meeting as well, then you would have a lot of people you could talk to about your recovery.

Apologies if you didn’t want advice but I felt that a good honest post deserved a response.

    Hi JD,

As Vera has now got it I have edited out your email address.

To you and for anyone else reading I feel i need to mention that this is an open forum on the world wide web. Whilst we can all be as anonymous, or otherwise, as we wish to be, we should also use the same safety precautions we would advise anyone to do in an open forum. As a site we discourage posting personal contact details, anyone wishing to exchange email addresses can do so safely by both parties emailing the office here.

Hopefully see you in a group again soon.

When you have those passwords safe so you can’t access gambling/funds to gamble then what positive things are you planning on doing to address your addiction?

I’m not techy but why not ask someone else to set it and to not under any circumstances let you have it before a certain date?
