Hi Jonesy, well done on looking for help/
Read the otehr threads here and you will see many stories simialr to your own, you will also see the success stories, what re they doing that you can apply to your own situation?
Friday is when you usually gamble? Great, now use that knowledge. Plan your Fridays, fill your time and have your barriers particularly high on that day. When on a Friday? After work? Lunchtime? If that is the case then have no access to money on you when you set out for work in the morning.
Keep posting and tell us a little more about your situation. What positive steps can you start taking?
charlesModeratorSorry SJ, it’s on auto. Have a great gamble free weekend.
charlesModeratorHi Matt, well done on looking for help. I’m sure that looking at the other threas here you will have read many stories similar to your own. You will also ahe read the success stories – what are they doing that you can apply to your own situation?
Lizbeth has suggested an online blocker, have you managed to get one yet? Can you come clean with a family member? Someone you could be acountable to, who could help by holding your money etc?
The important thing is not to try and do this on your own, use the support you have avaialble. keep posting here, check out your local GA meetigns.
I look forward to hearing how you are getting on.

Hello and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums
Here at Gambling Therapy we pride ourselves on being a caring and diverse online community who can help and support you with the difficulties youre currently facing. We understand that this might be a tough time for you, particularly if youre new to recovery, so come here as often as you need to and participate in the forums, access online groups and connect to the live advice helpline if you need one to one support. Were in this together!
Here on the forum you can share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. The beauty of writing it all down is that you can take your time and you will be creating a record of your progress that you can look back on if it ever feels like youre not moving forward. So, share as much or as little as you like but do try to stick to keeping just one thread in this forum so people know where to find you if they want to be updated on your progress or share something with you.
And on that note….
Im going to hand you over to our community because Im sure they will have some words of wisdom for you 🙂
Take care
The Gambling Therapy Team

PS: Let me just remind you to take a look at our
privacy policy and terms and conditions so you know how it all works!
charlesModeratorHi Seri,
I’m with you on this one. Recovery means that we can plan things, can look forward to stuff. Yes, we can and should not gamble one day at a time but that means we can plan life like anyone else.
I know GA literature can vary in different countries but in the UK version it has a list under the heading of Definition of a Mature Person. Included on that list is…
“Plan things in advance rather than trusting to the inspiration of the moment.”
You are doing well and by continuing to do the things you are doing, by continuing to focus on your recovery, you can make those plans and I look forward to both hearing what they are and then seeing you achieve them.
charlesModeratorHi FG,
Again Happy New Year.
I’m afraid I did have to ask you to leave following the recent changes to groups. The changes have been posted in the forum.
https://www.gamblingtherapy.org/en/changes-groups
Fortunately the number of groups you are able to access has only been reduced by two so I hope you are able to connect to one of the many other groups we have here. You also of course have access to the forum 24/7 and the helpline when it is open during UK office hours.
If you have any concerns about the changes then please email the office.
https://www.gamblingtherapy.org/en/e-mail-advice
I hope to see you in another group soon.
charlesModeratorI agree with Vera Lorraine, talk to your Union, talk to your employer and let them know that it’s your Dr who can’t meet their deadline.
charlesModeratorHi Lorraine,
I am sorry to hear of your current pain but am pleased to see the supportive replies you have already had. You can get through this Lorraine, whatever happens. Keep using all the support you have available to you.
Something I read somewhere once:
“If it’s not a happy ending then it doesn’t have to be the ending”Keep fighting, keep focussed on your recovery and using the support you have and you will get to a better place.
charlesModeratorEnjoy your holiday FG
charlesModeratorI always hated the New Year as well… everyone celebrating while I knew it would be the same old same old for me.
That can change though Mav, can your wife help by looking after the money? What other additional barriers can you put in place?
You have always hated the New Year? then it is probably a vulnerable time for you; what other times of the year do you hate? Use your knowledge Mav, plan your time. keep posting.
charlesModeratorHi Defeated,
Well done on looking for help.
When it comes to gambling then accepting defeat is actually a good place to be – it means we can stop fighting it, stop trying to beat the bookies/casino/where ever it is that you gamble.
Read the other stories here, you will see a lot similar to your own. You will also see the success stories – whata re they doing that you can apply to your own situation? Sad has already given you some good suggestions.
Keep posting and let us know what positive steps you are taking.
charlesModeratorHi Seri, I hope you had a great Christmas.
charlesModeratorWhat’s happened Mav?
charlesModeratorHi Lizbeth, well done on avoiding the casino’s “giveaways”.
It’s good to read that you had a nice Christmas. Keep doing what you are doing, one day at a time.charlesModeratorHello Riverdaleboy and welcome to the forum.
Well done on looking for help and I am glad you already have support at Gordon Moody already lined up.
From the heading of this thread you can “get help quickly.” It’s not the sort of help that is going to improve things straight away though. Read and post here. In the New Year get to a GA meeting, talk to the Citizens Advice Bureau or StepChange about any debts that you have.
You can’t gamble right now but what things can you put in place so that you are less able to act on any urges when you do have money again?
Keep posting.
