charlesModeratorHi Low life. This seems to be your third thread? Which of the suggestions you have received on other threads have you considered?
Torture? Yes it is. The thing is though that by going into bookies, leaving yourself access to that money to gamble with the person doing the torturing is yourself.
Which bookies do you normally sit in? How about going there tom orrow and asking them to ban you? How about putting that money somewhere that you can’t instantly access it?
Why are you like this? The short answer is because you are an addict, a compulsive gambler. Why you and not others? You maye never know, now you can waste your time keeping asking that question or you can start taking some of the steps that will help you avoid your next bet. Stopping gambling will make you much more likely to get to that 10k than gambling ever will.
charlesModeratorWell done on your gamble free time.
You are showing good awareness of risks. It is important that we see the benefits of not gambling and “….very little money for the foreseeable future….” will make it hard for you to do that.
There is a risk in trying to pay things off too quickly. Trying to clear debts in say 2 years and having to live like a hermit would likely seem a lot longer paying things over 3 or 4 years and leaving a little fun money. Living like a hermit is also more likely to eventually bring “*** it, what’s the point.” thoughts that can take peole back to gambling.
Be honest with yourself. Are the repayments sustainable? If not then maybe get some proper advice,in the Uk the Ciitizens Advice Bureau or Stepchange and good for that. Free advice.
Keep posting.
charlesModeratorHi I did it, yes a great poem as Vera says.
You said this thread was about your continued effort for self improvement? I look forward to reading about the things you are working on in your recovery. The things that you think need improving and the steps that you are taking.
charlesModeratorHi bcfc and well done on looking for help.
I would recommend copying your post over to the My Journal Forum, it’s a busier forum and you will get more feedback and support.
I would recommend finding a way to talk to someone, trying to keep hidden debts secret can in itself send peole gambling.
How about getting a blocker for your computer so that you can’t visit those gambling sites?
There is a lot of support you can use that doesn’t risk “going public”. Sites like this of course, places like Gamblers Anonymous – it is what’s said on the tin.
Keep posting and let us know what positive steps you are taking. Again I would recommend reposting in the My Journal Forum.
charlesModeratorWell done on your gamble free time SJ, I am glad you enjoyed your weekend, the benefits of recovery.
charlesModeratorHi Saluk,
Will the 2 jobs and your repayment plan be sustainable over 4 years? Maybe get some proper financial advice from either The Citizens Advice Bureau or Stepchange.
You aren’t alone with this problem and have a lot of help available to you. Post here more often, maybe get to Gamblers Anonymous meetigns, talk to Gamcare etc
I would avoid those “free slots”, theya re there for one reason alone – to tempt people to play for real.
How else could you fill your gamble free time? What positive steps can you take?
Keep posting
charlesModeratorHi Kam and welcome, well done on looking for help.
Read the other stories here and you will see a lot that you relate to. You will also see the success stories – what are they doing that you can apply to your own situation?
What barriers can you put in place? What financial accountability can you use?
What support options can you get to? You have started posting here, maybe check out your local Gamblers Anonymous meeting as well.
Your Mum doesn’t believe you? Why should she? There was no reason for my mum to believe me when I finally stopped.
The actions I have listed above though are actions which will not only help yopu stop gambling but also give her cause to maybe think “Maybe he means it this time.”
Keep posting, you can show your mum this site as well, there is a Friends and Family Forum that she might find useful.
Check out the group schedule as well. A group for New Members starts in about 15 minutes, maybe I will see you there.

charlesModeratorHi C and welcome, well done on looking for help.
Read the othe stories here, you will see a lot of stories similar to your own. You will also read the succes stories, what are they doing that you can apply to your own situation?
As Stilltime says, get some barriers in place. You can get a blocker for your PC which will stop those online sites. Who could help you with financial accountability as well?
It is an addiction, you introduce yourself as a gambler. Maybe check out the 20 questions on the Gamblers Anonymnous website and you might change that to compulsive gambler, there is a big difference.
Keep posting and let us know what positive steps you are taking to help you avoid your next bet.
charlesModeratorWell done on your gamble free 2 weeks. You are right, it is hard, bloody hard. The good news though is that you no longer have to do it on your own. You have started the road to recovery, keep posting and I look forward to seeing you progress along that road.
charlesModeratorHi Stilltime.
n
nMany people liken stopping gambling to a bereavement, personally I think it’s more like ending the biggest love affair we will ever have. Ever comparison could explain your current feelings.
n
nIf they persist however I would agree with Vera, you are using support to stop gambling, there are other forms of support out there as well – talk to your Dr.
n
nIt’s good to hear that the gambling thoughts are reducing, what are you doing to fill your gamble free time?
n
nHopefully see you in a group again soon.charlesModerator<

charlesModeratorHi Life,
A few points here. First of all how did you get on with those 20 questions I mentioned on your other thread?
As you say yourself, a few minutes later and the winnings were almost gone – with your previous gambling history why would it be different for you next time?
Most important, who is the “he” you were placing the bets for? If you carry on going in the bookies then you will almost certainly end up gambling yourself, you will keep watching the machines and talking to other gamblers, in short all the things that will make it hard for you to stop.
Whoever it is let them know that you are unable to put their bets on for them in the future.
Lastly, try and just keep one thread running. Then all the advice you get will be in one place and it will be easier for you to look back on your recovery journey.
