Hello and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums

Here at Gambling Therapy we pride ourselves on being a caring and diverse online community who can help and support you with the difficulties you’re currently facing. We understand that this might be a tough time for you, particularly if you’re new to recovery, so come here as often as you need to and participate in the forums, access online groups and connect to the live advice helpline if you need one to one support. We’re in this together!

Here on the forum you can share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. The beauty of writing it all down is that you can take your time and you will be creating a record of your progress that you can look back on if it ever feels like you’re not moving forward. So, share as much or as little as you like but do try to stick to keeping just one thread in this forum so people know where to find you if they want to be updated on your progress or share something with you.

    And on that note….

I’m going to hand you over to our community because I’m sure they will have some words of wisdom for you 🙂

    Take care

    The Gambling Therapy Team

PS: Let me just remind you to take a look at our

Hi Lorraine, I hope we hear an update from you soon, either here in the forum or in the groups.

You don’t have to do this on your own. In fact if on our own worked then i doubt we would have the problem in the first place. Hope to hear from you soon.

    Hello

Thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy friends and family forum. This forum will provide you with warmth and understanding from your peers.

Feel free to use the friends and family group, you’ll find the times for these if you click on the “Group times” box on our Home page. Now that you have introduced yourself you’ll find that many of the people you meet here have already read your initial introduction and they’ll welcome you in like an old friend 🙂

If you’re the friend or family member of someone who is either in, or has been through, the GMA residential programme please take extra care to make sure that nothing you say in groups, or on our forums, inadvertently identifies that person. Even if your loved one isn’t connected with GMA, please don’t identify them either directly or indirectly just in case they decide to use the site themselves.

You’ll find a lot of advice on this site, some of which you’ll follow, some you won’t…but that’s ok because only you fully understand your
situation and what’s best for you and the people you love. So, take the support you need and leave the advice you don’t because it all comes from a caring, nurturing place 🙂

We look forward to hearing all about you!

    Take care

    The Gambling Therapy Team

Hi Fraz and welcome to the forum. Well done on looking for help. Read the other stories here, you will see many things that you will relate to. You will also read the success stories – what are they doing that you can apply to your own situation.

The thing that jumps out immediately is to restrict your easy, instant access to your remaining savings. Who could look after that for you? Where could you put it where you can’t access it quite so quickly if/when you have an urge?

Well done on self exlcuding from some sites. Now exclude from any otehrs you use. You can also get a blocker for your PC that will stop you visiting all gambling sites, then you can’t find a new one.

Keep posting and let us know what positive steps you are taking.

Hi Patriot, well done on looking for help.

The bad news is that you are not going to get 400 Euros in a week. The good news though is that you can stop gambloing. read the other stories here, you will see many similar to your own. You will alos read the success stories, what are they doing that you can apply to your own situation?

Before you get paid again have some barriers in place. Instead of giving your wages immediately to the bookies maybe give them immediately to your mum. It will still be your money of course, to spend and gradually pay off your debts, but accountability will mean you can’t gamble it secretly. keep posting and let us know how you are doing.

Hi Low Life, bookies aren’t the poroblem, my brother gambles most weeks – why shouldn’t he? he doesn’t have a problem. We chose to give our money to them, no one stole it from us.

I read on another thread that you have to wait 10 weeks to be accepted inot GMA? Have you started the process? If not of course then it would take longer still.

10 weeks might be hard but it will pass. There are things though that you can do now, today. Things like tying up all your money, getting banned from your usual/local bookies etc. If there are things that aren’t going to happen straight away then start taking some of the positive actions that you can take straight away.

If you are in the UK the I would recommend eitehr the Citizens Advice Bureau or Stepchange for debt advice. Both are free and will give you expert advice on how to get things to a manageable situation. They will talk through your options with you and even write to your creditors for you.

    Hope this helps.

Well done on your gamble free time Life. You can stop gambling I promise you, it’s trying to control our gambling when in action that none of us can do.

Hi Freedom, thank you for posting and congratulations on your gamble free time.

I have every confidence you will get to that 10 months and further. Just keep it one day at a time. Whilst gamble free time is great the important bet is no longer our last one – it’s our next one we all have to avoid. Sticking with whatever support works for us helps us do that.

I hope you keep posting and I look forward to hearing your progress in both recovery and fatherhood.

It will be an important time for you, babies bring a lot fo joy of course but they also bring stress, sleepless nights, expense… so whilst it will be a busy time for you make sure you stick with those meetings, even if you might have to drop it to one a week!

Balance in recovery. Hopefully see you in a group again as well..

    Again, thanks for posting.

Hi Jacob, well done on looking for help.

You will find that you are wrong on many counts, peole do care. Your story can change things and this can be the start of your road to recovery. Whilst things are hurting right now you may well look back on your 19th birthdaty as the day when you started that recovery.

Read the other stories here. You will see that you are not alone with this problem. You will also see the success stories, what are they doing that you can apply to your own situation?

The most important advice I can ever give anyone is to use the support that is available – if we could do it on our own then none of us would be here in the first place. Keep posting here, many countries in Europe have Gamblers Aonymous meetings so check that out as well. Talk to your University, many have welfare teams that offer montoring services. Look for support for your other addictions as well, don’t stop gambling and then start taking more drugs – these things can easily switch.

Keep posting and let us know the steps you are going to start taking.
