3 December 2018 at 9:08 pm in reply to: Compulsive gambler , chased loss got it back then lost everything again #47433charlesModeratorHi Murr,
Well done on excluding from those casinos.
What other barriers could you put in place? I expect your family could help you with finacial accountability/making you less able to access funds to gamble with.
How have you been filling your non gambling time? Don’t “just” sit there not gambling, plan and fill your time and thoughts with other healthier activities.
Keep posting.
charlesModeratorHi Mike.
How to do it? The best advice i could ever give anyone is to use the support that is available – if we could do it on our own then no one would be here in trhe first place.
The good news is that these days there is a lot of support available.
Check out the My Journal Forum – you will see many things that you will relate to. You will also see the success stories, see the sort of thigns that are helping others stop gambling and then apply them to your own situation.
Just carry the money you need oin a daily basis – walking past the slot machine place with no “spare” cash in your pocket is a lot easier. if you can ask them to ban you as well.
Use support – start a journal in the My Topic forum, check out the live support groups here as well, download the app. Checkout other support as well. Gamblers Anonymous meetings is an option that helps many.
The good thing about living somewhere that there is lot of gambling is that there also tends to be lots of help available – use it and you can stop gambling.
charlesModeratorWell done on your gamble free time IDI. I recommend one day at a time but if you have next pay day as your target great, if you have Christmas as your target, great – but make sure you have another target in place as soon as you hit those targets. There are many who have got to Christmas not gambling, got to a holiday not gambling – then as soon as it has passed/they have returned from holiday it is very easy to slip back into old routines.
Keep posting, keep updating your targets.
charlesModeratorHi FosterJamie, well doen on looking for help.
Poker is certainly gambling, it doesn’t matter how much “skill” is involved – the addiction outweighs it.
Read the other stories here, you will see a lot that you will relate to. You will also see the success stories – what are they doing that you can apply to your own situation?
Is your gambling online? Get yourself banned from your usual sites, get a blcker so that you can’t sign up to any others. If your work pattern is usually like that then plan for your next week off, what else can you do in your spare time?
If your aim is to save money while here then open the sort of bank savigns account where you dont have easy, instant access to it. Make it harder to place that first, next bet.
Keep posting, let us kow the positive steps you are taking.

charlesModeratorOk, so I am no defender of the gambling industry but AOD isn’t promoting the gambling industry here – he is warning against the perils of it. At no point has he tried to advertise any particular gambling site so I don’t really think he should be criticised.
It is his job. I used to work in a pub – there are alcoholics out there – it wouldn’t be fair for them to attack me either.
I even know compulsive gamblers who continuie to work in the gambling industry, I also know CGs who are unable to do so.
Personally I don’t blame the industry anyway; it is ME who has a problem. My brother gambles most weeks and has done for years – he wouldn’t answer “Yes” to any of the GA 20 Questions. The gambling industry didn’t steal a single penny from me – I was more than happy to keep handing it over to them.
As AOL has said, if someone has issues with the gambling industry then the solution is simple – stop using it and start using the support and taking the positive actions that will enable you to do so.
