Hi Losschasing,
If you are unsure as to whether or not you have an addiction then take a look at the 20 questions they ahve on the GA site.
http://www.gamblersanonymous.org/ga/content/20-questions
They are as good an indicator as I know and are relevant whether or not you ever decided to go to a meeting.
Read the other stories here. You will see a lot that you will relate to. You will also see the success stories – what are they doing that you can apply to your own situation?
Keep posting, you can stop gambling.
charlesModeratorI am glad you are seeing the difference this year monica.
The good news is that recovery is progressive as well – it’s one day at a time but this time next year things could very well be better still.
Enjoy your Christmas.

charlesModeratorHere’s an idea. You have identified those gambling ads as a trigger. If you watch TV on a short delay you can fast forward all the ads. Trigger removed. 🙂
charlesModeratorWell done on coming here. You have stopped before so can stop again – this time keep posting here and you will be stronger and more able to maintain your recovery. Learn the lesson from today – transfer that money directly to whoever you borrowed it from rather than carry the cash. If that was a bookies you regularly pass then it would be a good one to pop in and get banned from. Don’t have any cash on you when you do. Keep posting.
charlesModeratorHi Wasey, well done on looking for help.
Read the other stories here – you will see a lot that you will relate to. You will also see the success stories and the sorts of things that have helped others stop gambling. You can apply them to your own situation.
You wil read how barriers can help. Where do you normally gamble? Get yourself excluded. How do you fund that gambling? Put things in place so that you can’t instantly access your money when you have an urge. Make yourself accountable – your fiancee could help with that. If you are saving for a house then at least that money can be in an account that you don’t have access to.
Barriers aren’t the total answer to addiction of course, but they beat the hell out of willpower alone.
Occupying your time is important. Plan your time so oyou don’t have those bored moments.
The most important thing is to use support; keep posting here, check out your local GA meeting.
Keep posting and let us know the positive steps that you are taking.

charlesModeratorHi Mike, well done on not gambling. When it comes to “getting it under control” and just gambling a litle I think most of us tried that in the past, didn’t you? The way I see it is that if we were able to exercise that sort of control then, to be blunt, we wouldn’t have been in the chit in the first place. I CAN stop gambling. Control it? No chance. I hope you are able to come to the same conclusion. Keep posting
charlesModeratorHi Taylar, well done on looking for help.
The good news about having all this at an early age is that you can address it now, not gamble/drink for the next X number of years before doing something about it.
Using support is important. Again there is good news – there is a lot of it about. Keep posting here, get to a GA meeting, get to an AA meeting, address both addictions.
You are already getting god advice here – who could help you with financial accountability? When can you get yourself banned from that casino?
I would say that filling your time is very important – with both drink and gambling becoming a problem it will be important to not just get hooked on the next thing that comes along. Fill your time and thoughts with healthier options, also a variety of options so that you don’t get hooked on something else – even positive things can become a problem if done to excess/the exclusion of other things.
Whatever is left of that inheritance put it somewhere safe – who could look after it for you? We all know that no money = no gambling. We usually find that out when we have lost it!! We can use that knowledge in recovery though. Barriers arent the total answer to addiction of course but they give a breathing space to allow you to start working on things.
Keep posting and let us know what positive steps you are taking.

Blijf posten.
