Hello and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums. By posting to the forums you’re allowing the diverse and caring Gambling Therapy community to help support you through the difficulties you’re facing.
This may well be a tough time for you – particularly if you’re new to recovery, so we encourage you to post here as often as you need to, as well as making use of the online groups and the live advice helpline if you’d like some one-to-one support. We’re all in this together! If you’re a new member, you are warmly invited to join Charles in one of the New Members Practical Advice groups (Mondays at 21:00 UK Time and Thursdays at 19:00 UK Time).
The forum is a great place to share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. By writing it all down you can start to build a record of your progress that you can look back on – particularly useful if you’re ever feeling stuck. Share as much or as little as you like – but you’re encouraged to stick to keeping to just one thread in this forum – so people know where to find you to check in on your progress or to share something with you.
The Gambling Therapy staff team don’t generally post to the forums as it is a peer support area of the site – so we’ll hand you over to the community from here.
Take care,
The Gambling Therapy Team

charlesModeratorHi Dadlife and welcome to the forums. Well done on looking for help. Read the other stories here, you will see a lot that you will relate to. You will also see the success stories – what are trhey doing that you can apply to your own situation?
Well done on excludng from that arcade. You mention your wife and family. Your wife could help with one of the other barriers that you will read about – financial accountability/limiting acess to funds with which to gamble. Still your money of course; accountability would just mean you couldn’t gamble without knowing that she would know. The actions that will help us stop gambling are the same actions which can help to rebuild trust etc
I would say forget a year not gambling – waaaaaay too daunting. Take things a day at a time and you can reach that year. Use support as well – the forums and groups here, maybe Gamblers Anonymous meetings, Gamcare or whatever – if we could do it on our own then none of us would be here.
Keep posting and hopefully I will see you in one of the gorups soon.charlesModeratorHello and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums. charlesModeratorHi Ujju, well done on looking for help. You are a normal person – a normal person with an addiction.
Read the other stories here. You will read a lot that you will relate to. You will also see the success stories and the sorts of things that have helped others stop gambling. You can apply these things to your own situation.
Speak to your family. In the past you have just presented them with the problem – now you can tell them what you are going to DO about it. They shouldn’t help financially, they are your debts. They could though help with some of the barriers – like setting the passwords on a blocker for gambling sites, like helping you with accountability so you CAN’T gamble secretly.
You have a lot of support available, here and elsewhere. You have stopped before so know you can again. This time though keep using support to maintian your recovery and help you stay stopped. Keep posting.

charlesModeratorHi Daniel, well done on looking for help.
I see a couple of positives here……
“I went to G.A. a few days later. I did fantastic with it. I was clean for almost 5 years……”
So, you KNOW you can stop because you did it before. You also KNOW what helped you before – get back to meetings. Keep coming here as well and you can be stronger still. Keep posting.
charlesModeratorHi Amber – the way next year ends will depend on what you do NOW. Keep using support, keep the barriers in place, get to those mee5tings – both online and in person. Life doesn’t get better straight away but it does get better. One thing that does happen straight away is that it stops getting worse!. Keep posting.

charlesModeratorHi Mutley, So, here you are posting in the Poetry Forum. Always good to see a post but maybe start/resurect one of your old threads in My Journal. Lok at the advice you have had previously. Get back to what has helped in the past.
I may have said this before but the trick to not having to keep coming back here is to not leave – use support to maintain your recovery, not just when in the ****. I look forward to hearing your positive steps in My Journal.

charlesModeratorGood advice Ken. If I don’t see you ion a group then I will take this opportunity to wish you a very merry Christmas.
charlesModeratorHave agreat birthday and Christmas lizbeth. Whatever number it is remember live doesnt begin at 40,50,60 etc it begins when we stop gambling 🙂
I have all my presents bought too – now that would never have happened when i was gambling.
Keep doing the things that are working for you.
charlesModeratorHi Amber. You have stopped before and you can stop again. This time though keep things in place. Keep the barriers up – actions that help you stop gambling are the same actions that can help rebuild trust with family.
This time also keep using support – here and GA meetings etc. If we need help to stop then it is important to keep using support to maintain recovery.
charlesModeratorHi Cat, Well done on looking for help. Read the otehr stories here, you will read a lot that you will relate to. You will also see the success stories and the sorts of thigns that have helped others stop gambling – what can you apply to your own situation?
There is an old saying – actions speak louder than words. the actions that will help you stop gambling are the same actions that might help rebuild trust with your husband. Actions like getting excluded, being accountable and limiting access to funds so that you can’t gamble. Importantly actions like getting to support, posting here, groups, maybe Gamblers Anonymous meetigns – if we could do it on our own then none of us would be here.
Keep posting and let us know what positive actions you are taking.
charlesModeratorSometimes we ive ourselves the best advice……
“….but to be honest I think I know what needs to be done.
I hope you can put something in place before payday.
Getting banned/blocked from online gambling would also be another good step to take before Tuesday.
