Hi everyone I have been gambling for about 6years now I bet on sports mainly football it started with a daft £10 when my brother told me about online gambling i didn’t really understand the rules etc but I went with it anyways I would loose about £10 every month and that was nothing however I went through a rough time in my life where I abused drugs and my life was pretty shit i was suffering from chronic anxiety and depression and this is when gambling really hit me hard, I started on medication and had counselling to combat my depression and anxiety and the tablets made me feel worse for the first week as they do however when I was at my lowest I used gambling as a crutch it took my mind off how I was feeling as all I could focus on was the football I started off betting on teams I knew and before I knew it i was betting on teams I didn’t even know existed and was gambling away into -£200 debt every week, after doing this every week for about a year my Mam found my bank statements and went absolutely crazy and sat down with me crying and that’s when it hit me I stopped for about 3 months got myself a new job behind a bar and life was good got myself a girlfriend we moved into a house we rent and everything was perfect however the gambling returned I have been gambling big for years now and always break even or loose like £100 so it hasn’t affected me but yesterday I had a gambling binge and lost half my bank account my job is stressful and I still suffer with depression I know gambling is making it 10 x worse but if I place a bet for the next day it gives me a reason to wake up the next day I am left with £400 in my bank and that’s all I have to my name anyways I have suspended all my betting accounts and trying to stay busy so I dont gamble i am off work for 2 days now so I can play my Xbox all day to keep me occupied any kind advice or words will be greatly appreciated I am trying to stay positive and see the £400 I lost yesterday as a expensive lesson to stop gambling

Hello and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums

Here at Gambling Therapy we pride ourselves on being a caring and diverse online community who can help and support you with the difficulties you’re currently facing. We understand that this might be a tough time for you, particularly if you’re new to recovery, so come here as often as you need to and participate in the forums, access online groups and connect to the live advice helpline if you need one to one support. We’re in this together!

Here on the forum you can share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. The beauty of writing it all down is that you can take your time and you will be creating a record of your progress that you can look back on if it ever feels like you’re not moving forward. So, share as much or as little as you like but do try to stick to keeping just one thread in this forum so people know where to find you if they want to be updated on your progress or share something with you.

As well as the forums New Members are invited to join Charles in the New Members Practical Advice Group On Mondays at 21:00 (UK) and Thursday at 19:00(UK)

      And on that note….

I’m going to hand you over to our community because I’m sure they will have some words of wisdom for you 🙂

      Take care

      The Gambling Therapy Team
