I am a university student in Australia, and I seemed to have my whole life ahead of me. I have a longing girlfriend and I am pursuing a course which I enjoy.

However, I am very much a thrill-seeker. I enjoyed playing poker since secondary school (back when I was 14) and I started playing small with my friends in school. I actually got suspended in High School because I was caught gambling in class.

Since entering university and moving away from home, I experienced freedom which I’ve never had before. The easy access of online poker and gambling websites, coupled with my weak mentality, resulted in my losing a couple of thousands of dollars over the past year. While compared to many others on this forum this may seem like a small sum, this is not the case for me as I am still a student without any income yet. Today, I gambled with the money I put aside for my university fees. After the session, I realised what a degenerate I’m becoming and I vowed to abstain from gambling from now on.

      Today is day 1.

Hello City Eagle and thanks for starting a thread in the Gambling Therapy forums

Here at Gambling Therapy we pride ourselves on being a caring and diverse online community who can help and support you with the difficulties you’re currently facing. We understand that this might be a tough time for you, particularly if you’re new to recovery, so come here as often as you need to and participate in the forums, access online groups and connect to the live advice helpline if you need one to one support. We’re in this together!

Here on the forum you can share your experiences in a safe, supportive and accepting environment. The beauty of writing it all down is that you can take your time and you will be creating a record of your progress that you can look back on if it ever feels like you’re not moving forward. So, share as much or as little as you like but do try to stick to keeping just one thread in this forum so people know where to find you if they want to be updated on your progress or share something with you.

As well as the forums New Members are invited to join Charles in the New Members Practical Advice Group On Mondays at 21:00 (UK) and Thursday at 19:00(UK)

      And on that note….

I’m going to hand you over to our community because I’m sure they will have some words of wisdom for you 🙂

      Take care

      The Gambling Therapy Team

Hello cityeagle, welcome to the forum and well done on looking for help.

As you hae been reading the other stories here you will have seen many similar to your own. You will also have seen teh success stories – what are they doing that you can apply to your own situation?

Their is a lot of gambling in Autralia – the good news is that there is also a lot of support available to you as well. here, places like Gamblers Anonymous and more. Your University no doubt has a “Student Services” of some sort which will likely be able to provide counselling/mentoring and sign post you to other support as well.

What barriers can you put in place? You family and/or girlfriend could help with those.

Keep posting and let us know the positive steps that you are taking.
